Guidance on how I should conduct business in an ethical, honest, and compassionate manner. It underscores the importance of fairness in trade, the payment of fair wages, respect for contracts, and care for the community, especially the poor. These guidance have shaped me to where I am now and served a a basic core values in doing business.

  1. Honesty in Trade (Business Integrity)
    Prohibition of False Weights and Measures (Leviticus 19:35-36): Strictly prohibits using dishonest weights and measures in business. It emphasizes that business transactions should be fair, transparent, and just.

“You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:15, Leviticus 19:11): This commandment applies to all forms of theft, including stealing in business dealings, fraud, or overcharging.

  1. Fair Wages
    Paying Fairly (Leviticus 19:13): must pay invoices on time and not withhold wages. “The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning.”

The Laborer Deserves His Wages (Deuteronomy 24:14-15): It’s emphasized that workers should be paid fairly and promptly, as they rely on their earnings for daily sustenance.

  1. Kindness and Charity
    Helping the Poor (Leviticus 23:22, Deuteronomy 15:7-11): Encourages individuals to be charitable with their wealth and help those in need. Farmers are instructed to leave the corners of their fields unharvested for the poor.

The Pursuit of Justice (Deuteronomy 16:20): Business people should ensure that their actions promote justice and fairness, not just personal profit.

  1. Avoiding Deception
    The Prohibition of Lying (Exodus 23:7, Leviticus 19:11): Business people should avoid deceptive practices, such as misrepresenting goods or services, and should always tell the truth.
  2. Fair Competition
    Prohibition of Taking Advantage (Leviticus 25:14): If you sell something to a neighbor or buy from them, you should taking advantage of their situation.

Respecting Others’ Property (Exodus 22:4): When engaging in business, you must respect other people’s property and return any lost items you find.

  1. Ethical Conduct and the Golden Rule
    “What is hateful to you, do not do to others” This principle is often applied to business ethics. It suggests that you should treat others in business the way you would want to be treated.

Integrity in Negotiation: Advocates for fair and just negotiations, ensuring that both parties are satisfied and neither is unfairly harmed.

  1. Respecting Contracts
    Fulfilling Promises (Numbers 30:3-16): It teaches the importance of keeping promises and fulfilling agreements. If a contract is made, it should be honored.
  2. The Role of Wealth
    Wealth as a Blessing, not an End (Deuteronomy 8:18): This acknowledges that wealth can be a blessing from Adonai, but it emphasizes that wealth should be used for the benefit of others and in service to justice and righteousness.
